What to Expect when communicating with people over the internet:
While it seems like a relatively simple concept, conversing with people on teh interwebz is very different from real life. The difference between the 2 are:
Real Life Conversations* One will know with whom one is conversing and what they are, and they will be treated as such
* One must be slightly tactful when interacting with other people as offending or upsetting people will have real life consequences that they will affect their daily lives, * One must abide by social "do's" and "don't's" which involves avoiding certain controversial topics such as: politics, religion, and certain other topics... |
InterWebz Conversation*Only hint of identities are usernames and Profile Pictures, meaning that one would not be able to behave differently depending on the situation
* The Anonymity of the people of the internet gives people the ability to behave as rude, obnoxious, prejudiced, arrogant, as they want without suffering any consequences. * Because people's decisions are no longer affected by an aversion to detrimental consequences, and the large amounts of said other topics present on the internet, people have no reason to hold back their opinions. |
These differences in societies create a new set of social rules that must be followed to converse on the internet. These easy steps will help you gain the mindset needed to properly fit in with people on the internet:
Step 1. Forget all of the Social Taboos you have learned to avoid in conversations. Those no longer have any use there.
Step 2. Perceive everyone on the internet as an enemy. They will undoubtedly do the same to you, and they're probably jerks in real life anyway.
Step 3. Forgot the meaning of the word compromise. One would think that the lack of consequences for bringing up controversial topics would make it a great place for debate, but it is actually quite the opposite. Arguments on the internet are shouting matches to see who can scream their opinion the loudest.
Step 4. Treat having an opinion that's different than yours as a felony.
Step 5. Comment on every internet video, blog, or whatever that slightly mentions politics, religion, or morality.
Step 6. Tune out logical arguments and points if you see them.
Step 7. Use incurrect grammer and speelling whenever posable?
Step 8. Whenever someone calls you out for your incorrect spelling and grammar, respond by calling them a "GRAMMAR NAZI"
If you follow all of the these steps then CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! You have now successfully developed the rudeness, ignorance, bluntness, and brashness needed to fit in to the Internet society (This list was a joke, please don't actually do this as people like the above described are extremely annoying). But you should be prepared to encounter people like this on the internet. The type people you find on the internet have different personality nuances that can be used to identify them and different methods used to handle them. The button below should take you to a guide outlining the different people on teh interwebs.
